Volunteer Roles
Red Team
Red team volunteers act as adversaries during competitions, testing student defenses:
- Design and execute realistic attack scenarios
- Use professional penetration testing tools and techniques
- Provide realistic pressure to simulate real-world threats
- Document findings and provide educational feedback
Requirements: Strong technical skills in offensive security, networking, and system exploitation. Must complete WCCOMPS red team training.
White Team
White team volunteers ensure fair play and smooth competition operations:
- Monitor scoring systems and competition infrastructure
- Respond to team questions and rule clarifications
- Verify services are functioning correctly
- Mediate disputes and ensure compliance with rules
Requirements: Good technical knowledge, strong communication skills, attention to detail. Must be impartial and fair.
Mentors
Mentors provide guidance and support to student teams:
- Help teams prepare for competitions through training sessions
- Offer career advice and industry insights
- Connect students with job opportunities and internships
- Provide feedback on competition performance
Requirements: Industry experience in cybersecurity, passion for education, good communication skills.
Event Staff
Event staff help with logistics and operations:
- Registration and check-in
- Venue setup and teardown
- Catering coordination
- Photography and social media
- General support
Requirements: Enthusiasm, reliability, good people skills. Technical expertise not required.
Scenario Developers
Scenario developers create competition content:
- Design realistic business scenarios and network architectures
- Write injects and business tasks for competitions
- Create documentation and supporting materials
- Test scenarios for balance and fairness
Requirements: Strong technical skills, creativity, understanding of business operations and security.
Mentorship Programs
WCCOMPS offers structured mentorship opportunities:
Competition Season Mentorship
Commit to mentoring a team throughout a competition season:
- Regular meetings (2-4 hours per month)
- Technical training sessions
- Mock competitions and practice scenarios
- Post-competition feedback and career guidance
Year-Round Mentorship
Build longer-term relationships with students:
- Ongoing career guidance and advice
- Industry insight and networking introductions
- Resume review and interview preparation
- Project guidance and technical support
Workshop Leadership
Lead standalone workshops on specific topics:
- 2-4 hour intensive sessions
- Topics like web security, network defense, forensics, etc.
- Hands-on labs and exercises
- One-time or recurring commitment
Time Commitment
We offer flexible volunteer opportunities to fit your schedule:
- Major Competitions: 3-day weekend commitment (WRCCDC, PRCCDC)
- Qualifiers: Single day events (typically Saturdays)
- Monthly Workshops: 2-4 hours on evenings or weekends
- Mentorship: 2-4 hours per month
- Remote Opportunities: Many roles can be done remotely
Training & Support
All volunteers receive:
- Onboarding and orientation to WCCOMPS operations
- Role-specific training for your volunteer position
- Competition rules and procedures documentation
- Technical resources and tools access
- Ongoing support from senior volunteers and staff
- Community Discord for collaboration and questions
